Australia including its Korean community held a commemorative ceremony around the nation on 27 July to mark the 65th anniversary of the Korean War Armistice.
The commemoration at the Australian National Korean War Memorial was attended by the Minister for Veterans Affairs Darren Chester, Korean Ambassador to Australia Lee Baek-soon and Korean war veterans.
Minister for Veterans’ Affairs Darren Chester said “the Anzac Parade service and other gatherings around the nation including Sydney would reflect with gratitude on the service and sacrifice of some 18,000 Australians, including Army and Royal Australian Air Force nurses, who served in the Korean War and post-Armistice period.”
He also addressed “we observe the Korea Veterans’ Day to pay respect to them and I have encouraged everyone to honor the commemoration, so as to let them know they are not forgotten.”
The veterans, at the well-attended service, seemed to be very hopeful that peace could be finally within reach considering the recent dramatic developments around the Korean peninsula following the inter-Korean summit and the summit between North Korea and US.
However, no matter happens on the Korean Peninsula the veterans will always remember their comrades who paid the ultimate sacrifice.
Meanwhile, the commemorative ceremony was also held in the Korean War Memorial in Sydney in the presence of NSW Governor David Hurley, Korean Consul-General Yoon Chang-soo and Korean war veterans.
The commemoration also took place in Melbouren, Gold Coast, Perth, Bendigo and Bomaderry.
The war began on June 25 1950 and in total Australian forces endured 1,500 casualties, with over 350 lives lost, 30 taken prisoner and a further 40 who are still listed as missing in action.
Combat during the Korean War lasted three years, with approximately 18,000 Australian personnel involved, with the last soldiers not leaving Korean shores until 1957.
