Korean born sopranos Hyeseong Kwon and Karah Son share the lead role of Cio-Cio San in ‘Madam Butterfly’

Korean born sopranos Hyeseong Kwon and Karah Son share the lead role of Cio-Cio San in the Opera Australia’s farewell to one of the most loved productions in the history, Moffatt Oxenbould’s magnificent ‘Madam Butterfly’ at the Capitol Theatre October 24 – November 4.

Karah So is making her debut with Opera Australia and graduated in Voice at the Yonsei University in Seoul, her native town.

She then completed her musical education graduating from the Vivaldi Music Conservatory in Novara (Italy) and attending the Academy of the Teatro alla Scala in Milan.

Hyeseoung widely renonwned as a real Puccini in Australia graduated from Seoul’s Han-Yang University with a Bachelor of Vocal Music, and obtained a diploma in opera performance with high distinction at the Conservatorium of Milan and the Vercelli Academy in Italy.

This will be the fifth time Hyeseoung has performed the role of Cio-Cio San with Opera Australia.

Premiering in 1997 this production of Madama Butterfly has been performed more than any other production in Opera Australia’s repertoire.

It has been universally praised for its sheer beauty, the gorgeous costumes, evocative sets and Puccini’s magnificent music.

They all come together to create a magical production that should not be missed.

Featuring some of the best known arias in the opera world including ‘Un bel dì vedremo’, Madama Butterfly is an unforgettable experience for opera first-timers and lovers alike.

Set in the early 1900’s the story follows American naval captain Pinkerton who has come to Japan and finds himself enchanted with a local girl, Cio-Cio-San whom he nicknames Butterfly.

Hyeseung shared the role with Japan’s renowned soprano Hiromi Omura in 2014.
