S. Korea to build museum on world letters by 2021

South Korea plans to build a museum on the collection, display and study of world letters in the city of Incheon, west of Seoul, starting in July this year, the Incheon municipal government said Tuesday.

Completion of the National Museum of World Letters in the city's international business district of Songdo, as planned by the culture, sports and tourism ministry, is scheduled for 2021.

CJ's 4D theaters drew 23 mln moviegoers worldwide last year

 The 4D movie theater chain run by South Korean conglomerate CJ Group drew 23 million moviegoers with its 4D movie screens around the world last year, the company said Monday.

CJ 4DPLEX Co., the 4D screen chain of CJ's cinema brand CGV, currently runs 612 4D movie screens in 61 countries, screening 3D films with physical effects simulating rain, wind, vibration or other sensory stimuli to maximize cinematic experiences.

Kim and Gen, a young Canadian couple, flew a total of 17 hours from Canada's capital of Ottawa to Vancouver and then to Incheon, South Korea, on their winter vacation this week to visit Kim's Korean grandparents in Jeonju, well over 200 kilometers from Incheon International Airport.


Lee Kwang-soo, Lee Sun-bin have been dating for 5 months

Rising actor and TV show star Lee Kwang-soo has been dating actress Lee Sun-bin for five months, the former's management agency acknowledged Monday.

The two Lees "have been dating passionately for five months ... since they first met through SBS TV show 'Running Man,'" according to Kingkong By Starship.

"They first became close colleagues through the show before their relationship evolved into a romantic relationship," the company said.


S. Korea's arts market grows 25 pct on higher architectural sculpture demand

South Korea's market for works of art grew nearly 25 percent in 2017 from a year earlier on increased demand for architectural sculptures, government data showed Thursday.

The total value of dealings of works of art reached 494.2 billion won (US$441.1 million) in 2017, up 24.7 percent from 2016 and the highest growth rate since 2008, when the first survey of the local art market was carried out by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Arts Management Service.


Ice fishing festival to get under way in Inje, 2,300 holes for catching smelt to be dug

A wintertime festival featuring ice fishing for "bingeo," or pond smelt, will return next month to the mountainous town of Inje, Gangwon Province, organizers said Thursday.

Running from Jan. 26 through Feb. 3, the 20th Inje Icefish Festival will provide visitors chances to enjoy fishing for the silver fish at two fishing grounds on a frozen lake that is 100 meters long and 70 meters wide.


S. Korea adopts new designs for e-passports, vehicle license plates

 South Korea on Friday adopted new designs for next-generation e-passports and vehicle license plates, the Culture Ministry said.

During a meeting of the public design committer, the ministry confirmed the new designs, which utilize traditional Korean beauty, for passports to used by members of the public, government officials and diplomats.


Nat'l museum of art opens fourth branch, in Cheongju

 The National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA) opened a new branch in Cheongju, North Chungcheong Province, as its fourth one in the country.

The new five-story branch, set to open Thursday, took two years to build on the site of an old tobacco factory, and is fitted with multiple open storage rooms, an exhibition hall and seminar rooms.


Actor So Ji-sub to meet fans in 7 Asian cities next year

South Korean actor So Ji-sub will hold events to meet Asian fans for two months starting February, his agency said Friday.

The agency 51k said the actor from "I'm Sorry, I Love You" (2004) and "Oh My Venus" (2017) will go on a fan meet-and-greet tour, titled "Hello," in seven Asian cities.

His first stop is Taipei on Feb. 10. Then he will visit Japan's Chiba for events on Feb. 20 and 21. In March, there will be events in Bangkok on the 2nd, Jakarta on the 9th, Hong Kong on the 10th and Manila on the 16th.
